Moving from Absolute Beginner Ballet into Beginner Ballet is an exciting step, but it can also feel like a big leap, especially when it comes to centre work.
At Absolute Beginner and Absolute Beginner Level 2, we place a strong focus on building the foundations of ballet technique. Students spend time learning the key positions of the feet and arms, understanding basic alignment and posture, developing coordination at the barre, and practising more stationary centre work.
At Beginner level, the focus begins to shift. Students are asked to use more full-body coordination, link movements together with greater fluency, travel across the studio, remember basic sequences, and start connecting steps together to create simple choreography.
This one-off masterclass has been designed to bridge that gap.
The workshop will give you the time and space to break down several essential centre steps that regularly appear in ballet classes from Beginner through to Advanced level. These movements play an important role in linking steps together, supporting transitions, and building confidence in travelling sequences, allegro combinations and simple choreography.
We will focus on approximately 8–10 key movements, exploring how to execute them correctly, how they connect to one another, and how they begin to appear in basic ballet choreography.
This class is ideal for students who have completed our Absolute Beginner and Absolute Beginner Level 2 courses and would like some extra support before transitioning into Beginner level classes. It is also suitable for Beginner or Improver students who would benefit from a slower-paced, structured session dedicated to essential centre work and ballet fundamentals.
Date: Saturday 5 September 2026
Location: Acosta Dance Foundation, Building 40, 1 Artillery Square, Royal Arsenal, SE18 6BH (5 min walk from Woolwich station on the Elizabeth line)
Time: 3.30pm - 5.30pm
Level: Students should have completed a minimum of 2 terms, around 6 months, of Absolute Beginner Ballet training, but ideally 3 terms, around 9 months.
This workshop is most suitable for students who have completed Absolute Beginner Ballet and Absolute Beginner Level 2 with us, or for Beginner/Improver students who would like to revisit essential centre work in more detail.
Price: £45
What to expect:
We will begin with a short barre to warm up the body and revisit the key foundations needed for centre work, including posture, alignment, turnout, weight placement and coordination of the arms and legs.
The main focus of the workshop will then be centre practice. We will break down approximately 8–10 essential steps that commonly appear in Beginner level classes and beyond. These may include travelling steps, linking steps, preparatory movements for allegro, and the kinds of transitions that help students move more confidently from one exercise to the next.
At Beginner level, movements become less stationary and often involve travelling across the studio. For safety and confidence, we will practise these steps in smaller groups where needed, allowing everyone enough space to move clearly and avoid bumping into one another.
Once we have reviewed the steps individually, we will spend time combining them into short sequences and simple dance phrases. This will help you understand how these movements work not only as isolated steps, but as part of a fuller ballet vocabulary.
We will also take inspiration from iconic classical ballets such as Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty to show how these foundational movements appear within repertoire and variations at every level.
By the end of the workshop, you should feel more familiar with common Beginner level centre steps, more confident with travelling across the studio, and better prepared for the structure and pace of Beginner Ballet classes.

Is this workshop suitable for me?
This workshop assumes some prior ballet knowledge. It is not designed for complete beginners attending their first ever ballet class.
You should already be familiar with the key positions of the feet and arms, the structure of a basic ballet barre, and common Absolute Beginner level exercises.
You do not need to feel confident with centre work yet — that is exactly what this workshop is here to support. However, the class will move at a slightly faster pace than an Absolute Beginner class and will assume that students already have some experience of ballet technique and terminology.
If you have completed our Absolute Beginner and Absolute Beginner Level 2 courses, this workshop has been designed with you in mind.
If you are unsure whether this class is suitable for you, please email info@londonballetclasses.com and we will be happy to advise.
About our teaching methodology:
Learning ballet as an adult is a different experience from learning as a child. Adult students often benefit from clearer explanations, more detailed breakdowns and a stronger understanding of why a movement is being taught in a particular way.
At London Ballet Classes, our teaching approach is designed specifically for adult learners. We do not expect students to simply copy and hope the technique improves over time. Instead, we break movements down carefully, explain the purpose behind each step, and help students understand how ballet technique develops progressively.
Centre work can be one of the most challenging parts of ballet for adult beginners. It asks students to coordinate the whole body, remember sequences, respond to music, travel through space and maintain technique without the support of the barre. This is why we believe it deserves focused attention.
Our masterclasses are designed to give students more time with the details that can be harder to absorb in a regular weekly class. They offer a supportive environment to ask questions, practise slowly, build confidence and strengthen your understanding of ballet from the foundations up.
We believe adult learners deserve thoughtful, structured and high-quality training. Whether your goal is to move into Beginner Ballet, build stronger foundations, or simply understand your technique in more depth, this workshop is designed to support your progress.
